Ostaria Posta in Piccolino has a long and distinguished history and is deeply rooted in the geographical and cultural landscape of Val Badia.

The origins of the building date back to 1895, when its founder, Pire (Pietro), constructed it alongside the newly built road. At the time, the house served two essential functions: it was both an inn and the local post office. Initially, it mainly welcomed stagecoach drivers, but it soon began to receive the first travellers eager to explore the region. This historic role as a place of meeting and exchange is still reflected today in the name “Posta” and in the hotel’s welcoming bar, which continues this tradition of hospitality.

Today, the hotel is run by the Tolpeit family, now in its fifth generation. From a geographical and tourism perspective, Piccolino is located in the municipality of San Martino in Badia, nestled between two of the Dolomites’ most renowned ski areas: Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) and Alta Badia.

Culturally, the hotel is closely connected to the Ladin identity, as Val Badia is one of the historic heartlands of the Ladin people, a Rhaeto-Romance linguistic minority. Nearby institutions such as the Museum Ladin Ćiastel de Tor and the Micurá de Rü Ladin Cultural Institute preserve and celebrate this centuries-old heritage.

The hotel itself embraces this identity and seeks to share it with its increasingly international guests through thoughtful details and genuine hospitality. The cuisine at Ostaria also reflects this strong connection to the region: traditional Ladin recipes are carefully preserved and creatively reinterpreted with South Tyrolean and Italian culinary influences.
