Not Standing / Alexander Vantournhout
Through the Grapevine Live
Italian Premiere
Two men. Similar height, different builds. Sixty minutes of negotiating who holds whom.
Alexander Vantournhout trained as a juggler and unicyclist before studying contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S. That combination — circus precision, choreographic intelligence — is exactly what makes Through the Grapevine so hard to look away from.Six years after its debut, the piece returns in a new version with one significant addition: composer and drummer Andrea Belfi performing live on stage. Where previous iterations used recorded sound, this version breathes differently, the music shifting in response to the dancers as much as the dancers shift in response to each other. The structure borrows loosely from the classical pas de deux — entrance, adagio, variations, coda — but what Vantournhout and Axel Guérin do with that framework is closer to a sustained negotiation of weight, trust, and control than anything you’d find at the ballet. Recipient of the Ultima, Belgium’s highest performing arts honor.
Italian premiere.
