Steeped in history

Castel Mareccio epitomises Bolzano and its millennial history. This charming castle is nestled in an idyllic setting, surrounded by vineyards in the heart of the old city centre and just a stone’s throw from the Talvera promenade. The Medieval fortress was first documented in 1273 and was built by the Mareccio family as their main residence. They belonged to Bolzano’s bourgeoisie and then obtained the status of nobility. The castle truly flourished in the 16th century when it was given to the Römer family – it was expanded and embellished until it became a veritable Renaissance castle boasting frescoed halls, a loggia, and a beautiful courtyard. It changed hands a few times until, in 1974, it was purchased by Bolzano City Hall. It has since then been managed by the city’s “Fondazione Castelli di Bolzano” foundation. Castel Mareccio is steeped in history, and its grounds, featuring a wealth of greenery, are the perfect stage for large cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, and shows. Castel Mareccio is one of the locals’ favourite areas, be it as an event location, a landmark to admire as they walk along the Talvera promenade or a place to explore its ancient walls. This makes it the ideal setting for Bolzano Danza with its high pull factor, creating immersive and interactive experiences striking the perfect balance between modernity and tradition.
