Leïla Ka came to dance late, without formal training, in a small city in the Loire Valley. Within a decade she had won six international awards for her debut solo, choreographed for some of the biggest names in music, and been named a revelation by the French critics’ union.Maldonne is her first work for a group, and it announces a major talent at full stretch. Five performers move through an ever-changing wardrobe — evening gowns, wedding dresses, everyday clothes, sequins — in a piece that is part celebration, part inquiry into what women perform for each other and for the world.
The music ranges from Lara Fabian to Shostakovich. The energy ranges from exuberant to quietly devastating.
