Baroque dance, reimagined for a summer evening in an Italian piazza. Then the audience joins in.
Bruno Benne has spent over a decade asking what Baroque dance looks like when it steps off the opera house stage and into the present tense. VIFS + Baroc’Bal — two complementary works performed back to back — is his most accessible and enjoyable answer yet. VIFS – water music opens the evening: a quartet of dancers working with a rearranged version of Handel’s Water Music, building patterns that feel at once historical and completely alive. Elegant, precise, and surprisingly joyful. Then Baroc’Bal invites the audience in. Guided by a dance master, spectators join the performers in the kind of processional, bowing, parade-style choreography that filled the court of Louis XIV — reframed for a public square in 2026. No experience necessary. Some willingness to look slightly ridiculous, helpful.
